How to Fix an Asus Keyboard or Touchpad That Is Not Working

A touchpad that suddenly stops is usually switched off, not broken. Asus laptops have a key for it that is easy to press by accident.

Touchpad not working

  1. Press the touchpad key. On most Asus laptops it is F6 or F9, or Fn with that key, marked with a touchpad symbol.
  2. Open Settings, then Bluetooth and devices, then Touchpad, and check it is switched on.
  3. Restart the laptop.
  4. Plug in a USB mouse. If that works, the touchpad itself or its cable is the fault.

When to stop: Call if the touchpad is dead after all four.

Keyboard not working

  1. Restart the laptop.
  2. Plug in a USB keyboard. If that works, the built-in keyboard has failed.
  3. If only some keys fail, check for crumbs or a recent spill.
  4. If keys type the wrong characters, check the language setting and the Num Lock key.

When to stop: Call if keys stopped after a spill, or a whole row is dead. Both mean the keyboard needs replacing.

Keyboard lights not working

  1. Press Fn + F4 or Fn + F3 to raise the backlight.
  2. On ROG and TUF models, check the lighting settings in Armoury Crate.

When to stop: Call if the lights never come on. It is usually a cable or the keyboard itself.

Questions

Can a single key be replaced?

Sometimes, if the clip underneath is intact. Often the whole keyboard is replaced.

I spilled a drink on the keyboard. What now?

Switch off, unplug, and do not turn it back on. Liquid under the keys can reach the motherboard.
