How to Fix an Asus Laptop That Will Not Charge
Before you buy a new battery, check the setting that catches most people out: Asus laptops can be told to stop charging at 60% or 80%.
Check the MyASUS battery setting
- Open the MyASUS app.
- Go to Customization, then Battery Health Charging.
- If it is set to Balanced or Maximum lifespan mode, the laptop stops at 80% or 60% on purpose.
- Choose Full capacity mode if you want it to charge to 100%.
When to stop: This is a setting, not a fault. No repair is needed.
Check the charger and port
- Check the charging light. Orange usually means charging, white or green means full, and no light means no power.
- Try another socket and, if you can, another charger of the same rating.
- Look into the charging port for fluff or a bent pin.
- For USB-C charging, use the port marked for power and a charger of the right wattage.
When to stop: Call if the port wobbles, sparks, or the charger only works when held at an angle.
Reset the battery
- Shut the laptop down and unplug the charger.
- Hold the power button for 40 seconds.
- Plug in and leave it to charge for 30 minutes before switching on.
When to stop: Call if Windows reports “plugged in, not charging” after all of this, or the base of the laptop is bulging. A swollen battery must be replaced.
Questions
Why does my Asus stop charging at 80%?
Battery Health Charging in MyASUS is set to Balanced mode. It protects the battery if the laptop is always plugged in.
How long should an Asus battery last?
A few years of normal use. Capacity falls gradually; a sudden drop usually means a fault.
