How to Fix an Overheating Asus Laptop
Heat is the main reason gaming laptops fail early. An hour of care now can save a motherboard later.
Give it air
- Use the laptop on a hard, flat surface, never a duvet or a cushion.
- Check the vents underneath, at the back and at the sides are clear.
- Raise the back edge slightly to let more air in.
When to stop: Carry on to the next steps if it still runs hot.
Clear the dust
- Shut the laptop down and unplug it.
- Blow short bursts of compressed air into the vents.
- Do not use a vacuum cleaner on the vents, and do not open a laptop that is still under warranty.
When to stop: Call if dust is packed solid or the fan rattles.
Check the fan mode
- On ROG and TUF laptops, open Armoury Crate and check the mode: Silent, Performance or Turbo.
- On other models, open MyASUS and look for the fan profile.
- Press Fn + F5 on many gaming models to switch modes.
- Close games and programs you are not using, and check Task Manager for anything using the processor heavily.
When to stop: Call if it shuts down by itself, or the fan does not spin at all.
Questions
How often should thermal paste be replaced?
On a gaming laptop used daily, every couple of years is sensible. We do this as part of a cooling service.
Is it normal for a ROG laptop to be loud?
Under load, yes. Constant noise when idle is not.
